It's really sad because Motorola used to be considered the best (back when walkie-talkies were hot, and cell phones were called bricks). There were two plants in the town I grew up in - Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and everybody wanted a job there; they paid decent money, and everyone knew they'd be there forever. I'm not sure what year it was (maybe 1998), as I moved out of state, but both plants are now closed.

Motorola layoffs

The company hasn't confirmed the total number of employees that were laid off but it is certain that many employees have been made redundant lately. We are still expecting more layoffs to come as the economy doesn't seem to be turning back to normal.
We just read in local newspaper that our management is planning for further 4000 layoffs in second quarter. During November and December, we got to see 1000+ employees leaving out of door. I think that the recession has taken down overall industry - and we have more people than others so !

Motorola plans to lay off another 4,000 employees, mostly from its Mobile Device business, and to report revenue for the fourth quarter of 2008 that would fall short of analysts' current estimates.
The workforce cuts at the troubled handset, networking and enterprise wireless company will come in addition to the 3,000 layoffs announced during last year's final quarter. Motorola, once the world's second-largest cell-phone maker, has been struggling since its Razr handset faded from popularity.
About 3,000 of the jobs will be cut from the handset business, with the other 1,000 coming from corporate functions and other business units, Motorola said Wednesday. The cuts will slash Motorola's annual costs by an additional US$700 million in 2009. Along with the earlier announced layoffs and some other cost-cutting steps, the company said it will realize savings of $1.5 billion this year. more...

Motorola will lay off 77 employees in their Windows Mobile Development group located in South Florida, as part of their 4,000 employee layoff nationwide. This comes just weeks after reports the company will focus solely on Android and our report that the company will not be developing a new Moto Q. The company's smartphone display at CES 2009 was minimal, with the Moto Surf A3100 being the only real smartphone of interest and that's not headed to the US anytime soon. The company continues to refute rumors they are abondoning Windows Mobile, but the only signs of life were conceptual photos leaked late last year. more...
