I expected that my severance package will include health insurance for 6 months or so. But they offer that. Is that the norm at Oracle??

Got laid off last month from Oracle -- was a engineer at Sun. Was shocked to hear the severance package when they offered it to me and that too in a very abrupt meeting. Only 2 1/2 months! My team members who got laid off 6 months ago ( before Oracle made the decisions) got at least 6 months. makes me think that may be I would have been better off being laid off 6 months ago.

Lay Offs are still happening in Canada, things are not being changed yet, no one can say when these things will stops, looks like two reason to me for lay off, one is Companies are in bad shape and Big MNC's are also taking benefit on Recession's name and making more profits not all but few. Second the Out source is another factor, as Companies are making more profits, these two things are very mush related. and that's the main reason, the new Job market is very slow or say nothing, why the Govt agencies and private survey institutes are saying recession is lower, as no jobs are coming or very few, that doesn't mean any thing.

Balance between work time and personal time is not very good. People have lost sense of personal life. Everyone is afraid to lose their jobs and works very hard to show they are better than the rest. By having so many new people there seems to be a longer learning curve experienced overall as a whole and may have added to some of the turn-over consistently experienced in some departments. I no longer have charm in working for Oracle.

I think as a consequence of the size of the company, there are a lot of employees. Forget about getting promotions/working up a career path - they actually have absolutely no formal promotion policy. The management team has run out of good sales people due to layoffs or bad management policies. When they need to cut they cut and it also has a hard time keeping the good employees due to layoff practices.
